Unlock Hearts is an organization that promotes literacy by providing book buying experiences to inspire a new generation of readers. Our mission is to give young readers an opportunity to discover their passion for reading, build a personal library and ultimately have a better opportunity for success.
Young readers should be between the ages of 8 and 14 and reside in one of the 5 boroughs in NYC. Students and parents must provide a copy of their report card, receive a teacher recommendation and fill out an application to be considered.
The UH program runs in two semesters - September to January and February to June.
During the school year, UH partners with schools to plan field trips to local bookstores during the school day. UH Mentors help students pick out books based on their personal interests.
Each month young readers are given their monthly stipend to spend on any book(s) of their choice from the designated bookstore.
By the end the month, UH students will film and publish their very own book review.
We recognize not every student will want to be on camera. We do encourage young readers to step outside of their comfort zone and give it a try. However, we do also offer opportunities for young readers to write and publish their reviews on the UNLOCK HEART blog.
UH Student reviews will be published on the UH website, Youtube and other social media platforms. Students are encouraged to share reviews with their peers and encourage other young readers to discover new passions.
Our program is open to young readers ages 8 to 14 in the NYC and Newark, New Jersey area.
